Cardo maximus
About us
Just across the Seine from Notre-Dame, stands Saint Julien le Pauvre, named after the legendary Catholic Saint Julien l'hospitalier. In front of this 12th century church is the only remaining Roman slab in Paris, which once marked the intersection of the Cardo Maximus (rue St Jacques, which led north to Belgium and south to Orleans), and the Decumanus Maximus, the via Romana (rue Galande to Place d'Italie and then to Rome). Located next to the old stone well on the right in front of the church, it looks more like a step today than a monument of historical importance.
